Slum Survivor comes to an end

Apart from feeling extremely cold, their last night out was quite good. The slum survivors woke up to enjoy a panina which was said to be amazing and after that they all packed while feeling extremely cold.
They then went to mass followed by the rest of Y4J and others. After the mass all the youths went back to the slum to break it down and clear it up and pack everything.
By 1 pm everything was packed and the youths were safely back home and warm.

End of Day 2

The slums survivors had quite a good day by the end of it. Though 2 of the girls went home as one woke up with a horrible migrain and the other one was throwing up. Also, a new member joined the slum survivors.
They spent most of the day re-building the slum and improving it.
Also, they found out that their ration of rice didn't have to be totally plain but could have some salt, pepper and oil in it and the look on their face when they had some flavour in their food was as if they bit into a piece of heaven. They really enjoyed it.
Just after they finished eating, His Grace the archbishop of Malta, Mons. Paul Cremona arrived and was offered a plate of rice which he enjoyed. He later had a look at their slum and also prayed with the slum survivors.
After he left, the group had a bible study and relaxed a bit till most of the youths at Y4J came to visit them.
Keep checking the blog for more updates on what happened during the night as the slum survivors survived through the horrible wind.

Beginning of Day 2

First night for the slum survivors turned out to be a tough one, with gale force winds and moments of pouring rain, the "housing" that they managed to put up last night was blown away and entirely soaked! They were forced to sleep huddled together in the doorway to the roof.Waking up rather cold and damp one would imagine their spirits were dampened....but that's not how we found them this morning! Having eaten only a bowl of plain boiled rice for breakfast, and some water, they were keen to tell us how people passing by thought something was wrong, some even offered them housing and food, while three youths spent a couple of hours getting to know some of the survivors asking questions and discussing issues. This morning after some time in prayer together, they were challenged to improvise making a ball and playing a short game of football. Then they set out to rebuilding their slum in preparation for another night. The next time they are allowed to eat their next bowl of rice is tonight, until then they're just feeling the feelings a billion people around the world feel most of the time, plain hungry and cold, undignified and misunderstood by many who pass by indifferently.
Tonight at around 7.00pm they are expecting a visit by His Grace the archbishop of Malta, Mons. Paul Cremona.
Tomorrow morning at 11.00am, Mons Gorg Grima, of Gesu fil-Proxxmu, will be celebrating mass together with the youths at St Rita chapel, St Julians.
All are welcome to join.

Slum Survivor Kicks off!!

Hey guys, the first day of slum survivor is over and the slums are all built and ready. It took around 5 hours to actually build the slums and it was raining abit so it was a bit harder to finish. The girls tent had a few problems but as far as i know everything is fine now. The slummers ate at around 8 last night and they all dug in as they were all realy hungry and were really tired by the end of the night. They are truly experiencing life in a slum and all the hard work that is needed!!
I'll get back to you tonight with information about what challenges they had to go through during the day and how they managed to survive the night.
Pray for them guys!!

A few more hours...

Hey guys, last few preperations before the event...
So... we're all getting a little excited, not really knowing what to expect.
We are going to be living with no technology, no change of clothes, a house made out of cardboard, wood and plastic and be living on a limited diet of two handfulls of rice a day. And why? Because we want everyone to know that 1 billion people live like this everyday, and we know that it isnt the way God wants it! So we are also raising money for an orphanage in Kenya.
So we ask you to keep us in your prayer, because through prayer we know that God will bring change in peoples lives! And if you have some free time pls come visit us and support us! =)
God bless you guys and keep us in prayer pls!

Intro

We are 11 Maltese youths and we’re going to spend a weekend living on the Baystreet Terrace in slum conditions; creating our own shelters and learning about life in the slums and temporary settlements that house many of the world’s poorest people. We’ll be undergoing challenges, existing on a limited diet of two portions of rice and beans daily, a basin of cold water to wash with, praying for change and raising money for an orphanage in Kenya.

God Bless =)
What is it all about?

Y4J, in collaboration with Gesu Fil-Proxxmu, are organising Slum Survivor on the Baystreet Terrace in which some of us (as stated above) are going to live a weekend in slum conditions to raise funds for an orphanage in Kenya.

Situated in Nakuru, this orphanage shall be taking in homeless children with the idea of strengthening them and feeding them to later be adopted by richer Kenyan families, since adoption by foreigners is not allowed. Last year, Gesu fil-Proxxmu managed to have sixty children adopted by Kenyan families who otherwise would have been left to die in the streets. To be run by Indian nuns, Y4J has been asked to “adopt” this house and shall organise an annual trip to Kenya for a group of youths to actually provide hands-on help in the orphanage. The cost of such an orphanage is estimated to be close to €400 a month. Slum Survivor is an activity with two incentives: to promote awareness and to raise funds for the Y4J orphanage. Therefore your support on this initiative will be greatly appreciated.

The ways to help out are numerous. Firstly, you can help out by passing the word around! That is a major help since good promotion tends to cost money!! Secondly, you may want to help by supporting us at Baystreet with your visits. A weekend in the cold on that roof seems fun however having you around will make it even better. Lastly, you may wish to help financially. There will be various donation boxes around Baystreet. You may wish to donate in this manner: 12 Euro a hamper with a chicken, 17 Euro a sack of rice, 25 Euro a sheep, 100 Euro a cow, or you may choose to keep a child alive with 12 Euro a month.

We thank you for your support!

God Bless You!
